Recipe Review

(Originally published in December 2014 before I created this website) I think I will just jump right in to this whole eating healthy thing by trying a green smoothie. I’ll admit that I was quite nervous to try it. I also saw cayenne pepper as an ingredient and I wasn’t sure how I would like pepper in a smoothie but I always try to make any recipe as-written first then make customizations next time just in case something surprises me. I also do this so I am reviewing the actual recipe and not what I think the recipe should be.

Well . . . I was right.

Cayenne pepper does not belong in a smoothie! It’s already painful enough to try and drink greens when you are new to this way of eating, but adding cayenne makes it unbearably spicy. However, I must note that I am not a fan of cayenne at all even in savoury dishes because I feel like it just adds spiciness without adding anything to the flavor.

That being said, the rest of the smoothie was delicious. Lime, mango, coconut, pineapple: so many tropical flavors that work really well together. The green in this smoothie is spinach, which I could hardly taste. That makes this a good introductory green smoothie (minus the cayenne) because it is actually sweet and refreshing and not bitter like some green smoothies can be.

Have you tried this recipe? If so, what did you think of it? Let us know in the comments below.

Recipe Ratings:

Difficulty: Easy, just blend.

Did my toddlers like it? I didn’t have them try it because it was too spicy

Will I make it again? Yes, but without the cayenne

Overall: 3 out of 5 stars

This recipe can be found on page 38 in the Forks over Knives Cookbook.

Why isn’t the recipe posted here?

This post is part of the Forks Over Knives Cookbook Project, an effort to post pictures and reviews of all 300+ recipes to help you decide which recipe is worth cooking. The cookbook only has a few photos so hopefully people find it helpful to see what the recipes look like once prepared.

I also wouldn’t want anyone new to this way of eating to get discouraged by spending a lot of time and effort on recipes that don’t taste amazing, since WFPB food can definitely taste great. I apologise about the lack of a recipe included but I cannot post it for copyright reasons. However, many of their recipes can be found on their website or their app if you don’t have the cookbook.
